wish you were here
four words expressed through the presence of two (or more, or fewer) chairs

we are saralio
we are sara and aliocha.
as our work takes us to different parts of the world, often separately, we turned to our immediate environments in search of the presence of the other we were missing. we found that in the chairs we would see left behind, abandoned, simply forgotten about, or perhaps even perfectly arranged in a kind of geometric amalgam, creating a kind of chair-body.
with so little, they speak so much.
chairs, for us, often represented what was left behind – a conversation had, time spent, a coffee drunk, hearts opened – but they're also like invitations to be sat in, from us to each other, but also from us to you, the viewer.
imagine taking a seat in one of our chairs, and imagine what the view before you has to offer. maybe you're alone, maybe you're not.
in any case, may it spark all the glorious feelings love and hope can conjure as they mélange with melancholy, nostalgia and longing.
dear You,
when i just can't seem to find the words,
or they simply have a hard time leaving my mouth,
feeling sticky, heavy, clumsy or shy.
or perhaps when words just don't quite fully express the depth and enormity of what i feel,
maybe this photo of an absence presence
will embrace you with the warmth and longing i feel
for you
right now.
“A work of art exists as itself; a chair exists as a chair itself. And the idea of a chair isn’t a chair.”
